I am from books, books, and more books:
Narnia enthralled from an early age and
Bible Stories were read every night before bed
(followed by me reading under the covers by flashlight after bedtime.)
I am from music, so much music:
From old Hymns and my mama playing piano for church and daddy singing special music with the quartet before preaching.
From Piano Lessons taught by my mother.
and from songs where you spell things out, apparently:
"The B-i-b-l-e, yes that’s the book for me…"
“I am a C, I am a C-H, I am a C-h-r-i-s-t-i-a-n”
“…J-E-S-U-S is right…”
I am from Sundays in church (forced to wear dresses), sword drills, Bible baseball…
I am from finding Jesus at church camp, from baptism, from prayers before meals.
I am from Cuckoo clocks and Grandfather clocks.
I am from the red brick house at the end of the street
with dad's luscious garden and the big backyard for kickball and baseball
and the basketball goal over the garage.
I am from the oak trees in front
and the apple trees (long gone) in back where I would climb and sit and read;
the holly tree I would climb so high;
the maples helped provide us with bases for our makeshift ball fields
I'm from English and German ancestors and I’m from the land of the bluegrass, from the smallest big city in America that somehow maintains a small town feel, where it almost never takes six degrees to find a connection with someone else from the area with a population around one million.
I’m from traveling to the grandparents for the holidays;
loud talkers whose voices carry (Neyharts tend to be preachers and teachers!);
and a mama and her daddy, Hermie, whose quiet stillness in their eyes brings a calming presence (these are the peace-makers).
I’m from a home full of "I love you”s and lots and lots of hugs.

Today is Heritage Day in South Africa.
Here’s a really fun template we’re using, based on the poem by George Ella Lyon.
